Even Sparrows... Bird watchers

Even lbjs are good to see!

Sparrows are classic ‘little brown jobs’ that some people dismiss as uninteresting, but they are not unique in the UK for being small brown birds. Indeed, an American birdwatcher I met on our holiday back in May spoke disparagingly of all British birds in this way, in contrast for example with the colourful warblers on show in his native California. Well, he would NOT have appreciated the little bird I was trying to see in early August on a local walk one evening. The frustrating thing was that I could hear it well and the song is very distinctive as a low pitched and continuous sound akin to a fishing rod being reeled. I walked up and down the path for 30 minutes without success, but then to my pleasure there it was – a Grasshopper Warbler only 40 feet away on a dead plant some 2 feet off the ground. Streaky brown plumage, round tail and not much to look at it, but good at long last to see!
